Jane Stuart painting raffle list

This collection contains a list of sixty raffle participants, at 5 dollars a ticket, for a painting of George Washington by Jane Stuart based on one by her father, Gilbert Stuart. Proceeds were to benefit “the Club” possible the Newport Reading Room. The raffle was held in Newport, Rhode Island in August 1868.

Jesse Moore letter

Scope and Content Note This collection contains a letter from Jesse Moore to his parents. In 1794 Jesse was a teacher at Washington College. He writes to his parents about the rumors that he is going to become a Clergyman for the Presbyterian or Episcopal church. He denies this rumor, while many say it would suit him the pay is too mean, he also addresses what he believes to be unscrupulous people among his Quaker congregation at home who wish to see him expelled. John F. Melvin account books

John T. Dodd & Sons records

This collection contains five ledgers covering the history of John T. Dodd & Sons Undertakers. The first ledger is for John T.’s carpenter business it shows various building jobs but also numerous requests for coffins including from slaveowners for their slaves. The later ledgers show how the business moving away from carpentry and more to undertaking with fewer building jobs entered and more entries regarding the detail on the types of coffins made.
